Chapter Twenty

Eugene

Eugene hadn’t thought much of Stephan Bardot’s daughter the summer she began working at the funeral home.

She had been awkward, barely cresting into adulthood after graduating from college. Ella had worn designer jeans and graphic t-shirts while sorting through paperwork. Had worn her hair short and messy in the summer sun while she dug weeds out of flower beds. She had done the work—to the best of her ability—but Eugene knew underneath her pleasing nature lay the heart of an heiress. The Bardots had the bees in hives and their daughter was a shining example of it.

He may have thought of her as spoiled, but that wasn’t unique to Ella. Eugene had thought the same of Stephan upon seeing him, fresh and new to the world. Curled in the safety of his mother’s arms, screaming at the top of his lungs. He knew that he would be spoiled, regardless of the circumstances of his birth. Just like his father before him, Stephan would carry on the Bardot legacy and rule Eugene’s will with his every wish.

The thought was fuel to the hatred that lived within him. Malice and venom had grown gnarled, hideous branches that tore at the viscera in his body. Seeds had given way to festering roots that had been buried in his bones decades ago. All for the Bardot family and all of it was tempered by the collar of sinister magic that kept Eugene from biting them.

Eugene observed Ella as she ate her breakfast. She had caught him off guard with her question, even more so by her agreeing admission of her privileged life. Her declaration that she wanted to be treated like a woman had left Eugene puzzled, though strangely proud. He wasn’t sure if her affection for him had waned now that she was guaranteed access to him, or if she had finally processed what had happened to her. But her willingness to dedicate the day to their game and accelerate his plans excited him.

The possible outcomes of her discovery, and what she would do with those secrets, nearly sent his feet tapping in anticipation. Would she run or would she face her infamous legacy head on? How quickly would she fall apart over it? Would she blame herself or her father? And what would her eyes be like then, filled with betrayal and rage?

Those curious and callous thoughts gave way to one Eugene was unprepared for.

How will she react when she finds out about you?

An unease he wasn’t familiar with settled in his stomach, pushing the rot aside. It was unlike anything he had felt before, and the longer he stared at Ella’s face, the more he became aware of its presence. Eugene suffered through the worst of it, until Ella had pushed her empty bowl aside and took her tea in hand. The paint on her nails was starting to fall away, spider webbing like broken glass.

“Would you like more coffee before I start?” she asked, moving to stand. “I’m going to get more tea.
